The Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (UMCDF) and Umatilla Chemical Depot recently reached a milestone of 5 million pounds of chemical agent destroyed. Since the beginning of operations in September 2004, the site has eliminated the nerve agents GB and VX, and is currently destroying HD mustard blister agent.

On Sunday, Oct. 3, the U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency (CMA) achieved the destruction of 80 percent of the U.S. chemical agent stockpile. The United States ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention treaty in April 1997. “This is another positive step in meeting the treaty.

Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility weekly project update - October 7, 2010
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has approved the UMCDF’s Temporary Authorization Request (TAR) to construct, install and systemize a Rinsate Feed Collection System (RCS). Official approval came from Steven Potts, DEQ administrator of the Chemical Demilitarization Program, in a letter dated Oct. 1. It notes that this temporary authorization will expire March 30, 2011, or when a decision on the rinsate Permit Modification Request (PMR) is made, which ever occurs first.

The Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (UMCDF) has received the OK to increase the destruction of mustard ton containers through the Metal Parts Furnace (MPF) from a 50 percent processing rate to 75 percent.
